Frequently Asked Questions Tree service company in Orillia, Simcoe County, Muskoka & Nipissing-Parry Sound District
- Do you offer free estimates? Yes, Horizon Tree Company offers free estimates for all of our services. We will visit your property, assess the trees or work required, and provide clear recommendations along with a detailed quote so you can make an informed decision with no obligation. We are also happy to offer free consultations and advice for other tree-related questions, helping property owners better understand the health, safety, and management of their trees.
- What areas do you serve? Horizon Tree Company proudly serves communities throughout Simcoe County, Muskoka, and the Parry Sound–Nipissing district, providing professional tree services for residential and commercial properties. Our team regularly works throughout these regions and understands the unique landscapes, property types, and seasonal conditions that come with them. We are also happy to travel outside of these areas when requested to accommodate specific projects or client needs.
- How do you remove trees close to buildings or power lines? Trees located near buildings or power lines require specialized techniques and careful planning. Our team uses controlled removal methods where the tree is carefully taken down piece by piece to safely avoid surrounding structures and infrastructure. Depending on the location and access, we may also use bucket trucks, cranes, climbing techniques, or rigging systems to safely lower branches and sections of the tree to the ground. At Horizon Tree Company, our licensed and insured arborists follow strict safety procedures when working near structures and energized lines to ensure the job is completed safely, efficiently, and with minimal impact to the surrounding property.
- Do you provide emergency tree services? Yes. Horizon Tree Company provides 24/7 emergency tree services to respond to situations such as storm damage, fallen trees, hazardous limbs, or trees that pose an immediate risk to people or property. Our team is equipped to safely assess the situation, secure the area, and remove or stabilize damaged trees as quickly and safely as possible.
- Can you haul away debris after tree removal? Yes, we can haul away all debris and material as part of our service, leaving your property clean and clear upon completion. However, hauling and disposing of material does increase the overall cost of the project due to transportation, dump, and tipping fees associated with proper disposal. Some clients choose to forgo this option to help reduce costs or keep the wood for firewood, which we are happy to accommodate as well. Our team is always happy to discuss the best option based on your preferences, budget and scope of the job.
- Do you offer stump grinding after tree removal? Yes. Stump grinding is available as an additional service and cost following tree removal. This process removes the remaining stump below ground level, allowing the area to be leveled, replanted, or prepared for landscaping. Stump grinding is normally completed at a later date, typically within 2–4 weeks after project completion. It can be added to your original quote or scheduled separately depending on your needs.
- What certificates and experience does your team have? Horizon Tree Company’s team includes Ontario Journeyperson and ISA Certified Arborists, as well as qualified Utility Arborists with over 20 years of combined industry experience. Our crew is trained in hazardous tree removal, professional pruning, and vegetation management around critical infrastructure while following strict industry safety standards. Our qualifications include IHSA Line Clearing, Transmission and Utility Line Clearing, Utility Work Protection Code, Industrial Vegetation Management, Advanced Rigging (I & II), Tree & Bucket Rescue, Tree Hazard Awareness, and Safe Limits of Approach. Our team members also maintain rigorous safety training such as First Aid & CPR, Working at Heights, Traffic Control (Book 7), IHSA Electrical Safety Awareness, WHMIS, Fall Protection, and Hazard Recognition. With ongoing training and field experience, our team is equipped to handle everything from routine tree care to complex and high-risk tree operations safely and professionally.
- What affects the total cost of the job? The cost of tree removal depends on the tree’s size, location, and proximity to structures or power lines. Accessibility, required equipment, and the complexity of the job also influence pricing, along with optional services such as stump grinding or debris removal.
- What time of year is best for tree pruning or removal? Many tree services can be performed year-round. However, the best timing can depend on the tree species, tree health, and the reason for pruning or removal. Our team will assess your tree and property, and recommend the best timing for the work.
- Do you carry liability insurance and WSIB coverage? Yes. Horizon Tree Company carries full commercial liability insurance and maintains active WSIB coverage for our team. This ensures your property is protected and our workers are properly covered, giving you confidence that your project is being handled safely, responsibly, and in full compliance with industry requirements.
- Do I need a permit to remove my trees? Permit requirements vary depending on your municipality and the size or species of the tree. Some areas require permits for larger trees or those located within protected zones. We recommend checking with your local municipality, and we are happy to help guide you through the process if a permit is required.
- Why can tree work be more expensive than expected? While we always strive to provide fair and competitive pricing, some jobs cost more due to the complexity and risk involved. Factors such as tree size, location near structures or power lines, limited access, and the need for specialized equipment like bucket trucks or cranes all influence the overall cost. Cleanup and haul-away of debris can also impact pricing, depending on the volume of material and disposal requirements. Pricing reflects operating as a fully licensed and insured company with active WSIB coverage, ongoing professional training, and years of hands-on experience. When you hire a qualified team, you’re investing in safety, proper technique, risk management, and the protection of your property, not just the removal of a tree.
- Can a tree be saved rather than removed? In many cases, yes. Trees can often be preserved through proper pruning, structural support, or by addressing underlying health issues. Our team will carefully assess the condition, location, and structural stability of the tree to determine the safest and most effective solution. When possible, we always aim to preserve healthy trees while ensuring they do not pose a risk to people, property, or surrounding infrastructure.
- Can tree removal cause damage? Professional tree removal is carefully planned to minimize impact to surrounding areas. Our team uses specialized equipment and controlled removal techniques to protect lawns, landscaping, and nearby structures as much as possible. Depending on the size and location of the tree, as well as equipment access, some minor ground disturbance can occasionally occur. If any part of your lawn or property is affected during the removal process, Horizon Tree Company will repair the area at no cost to you. This may include leveling disturbed soil, repairing ruts, and applying new grass seed to restore the area. We take pride in leaving your property clean, safe, and looking its best once the job is complete.
- Can you remove trees in the winter? Yes. Tree removal and pruning can safely be performed year-round. In some cases, winter conditions can even make access easier because frozen ground helps protect lawns and landscaping.
- How long does a typical tree removal take? Most tree removals can be completed within a few hours to a full day depending on the size of the tree, its location, and site access. Larger or more complex removals near structures or power lines may take longer due to the careful planning required.
- What should I do before your crew arrives? To help the job run smoothly, please clear vehicles, trailers, or other movable items from the work area so our equipment and team can access the site safely and efficiently. If possible, it is also helpful to inform nearby neighbours that tree work will be taking place, as equipment, falling branches, or temporary noise may occur near property lines. If your property has septic beds, irrigation lines, or other underground features that may not be visible, please mark their locations so our crew can avoid them while working. For safety, pets, children, and anyone not involved in the work need to remain well away from the work zone until the job is complete. Taking these steps ahead of time helps ensure the work can be carried out safely and efficiently.
- Does your team work on remote or hard-to-access properties? Yes. Horizon Tree Company regularly works on rural, remote, and hard-to-access properties. When a location cannot be reached by road, our team is equipped with ATVs, snowmobiles, and boats to safely access the site. We have experience working in remote areas, waterfront and island properties, and other locations where traditional access may be limited. Each project is carefully planned to ensure the work is completed safely, efficiently, and with minimal impact to the surrounding environment.

Amazing service, friendly, knowledgeable, and very professional. I would trust Brent Maw and Horizon Tree Company with all my Arborist needs. 100% recommended.
Daniel Loeffen
What a fantastic experience. The first day the crew showed up, they walked the property with us, marked some trees we were concerned about and provided a quote. We scheduled an appointment for the work. They showed up first thing on the day. We had them clean gutters as well as take down several trees. They did such a great job. They were courteous, cautious, and very professional. It was really interesting to watch how accurately they could drop trees. The one tree was 55' and it landed exactly where they planned. What was spectacular was the clean-up. We couldn't tell they had been there. All the tree waste was gone. And as you know, cleaning gutters creates a mess, and all of that was cleaned up as well. Excellent! We will keep using Horizon.

I used Horizon Tree Company owned and operated by Brent Maw on two occasions. November 2022 to fell a tree that was encroaching on our Utility Shed. The second occasion was August 2023 to take down a tree in our front yard. The work was done professionally and watching him on both occasions it was very obvious that this man knows his business. Cleanup after both jobs was done and complete. Brent is both professional and courteous. I have no tree issues on my property at the moment but I would not hesitate to contract him again in the future. I would recommend him 100% to anyone needing his Services. Although Brent lives in North Bay and does service Simcoe County (We live in Orillia), based on the recommendation I received, I did not hesitate to go out of our area, considering I could have used someone closer. As mentioned before, his work is second to none and I highly recommend him!

The guys did a fantastic job removing a large spruce tree in close proximity to overhead power lines. The yard was spotless after they were done. Price was very fair and excellent communication as to what they needed from me, and what was expected of them. 10/10 would hire again.
